Walk Overview

This is one of the most popular and beautiful walks in the Peak District, and for good reason. The route follows the River Dove along a level, well-surfaced path suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs, set in a stunning limestone valley.

The main route runs from the Dovedale car park alongside the river to the first bridge. A newly-constructed boardwalk extends the accessible route another 0.5km to the second bridge, offering fantastic views of the famous stepping stones (which are not accessible) and the valley beyond.

Detailed Accessibility

This route is classified as **Grade 1** and is suitable for most manual and powered wheelchairs, as well as pushchairs.

  • Surface: Tarmac path and plastic-aggregate boardwalk.
  • Gradients: Mostly flat (1:100). One short ramp of 5m at 1:6 to access the boardwalk.
  • Path Width: 1m to 1.5m wide throughout.
  • Barriers: One gate accessible via a RADAR key at the start of the boardwalk.
  • Seating: 2 benches are available along the route.

Route Description

From the Dovedale car park (toilets available), follow the wide, tarmac path alongside the River Dove. The path is level and offers beautiful views of the water and surrounding hills. This section is approximately 1km.

Cross the first bridge. Access the boardwalk via the 5-metre ramp (1:6 gradient). A RADAR key gate is present. Follow the boardwalk for another 0.5km. This section runs through woodland and opens up to views of the stepping stones.

The accessible route ends at the second bridge. Return by the same path, enjoying the views from a different perspective.
